Growing Small Plots of Vegetables For Health and Income

Since I decided in my late Teens to always be in control of my Lifestyle and Income, one area of endeavor I chose was food production. But we kept acreage small ( never more than a couple hundred) and concentrated on small plots of "specialty" and standard crops that could be sold Locally, therefore allowing us to receive full market Value from the end user.

As our children reached school age we concentrated on 20 acre of mixed vegetables and some Meat (Rabbit, Hogs and Chickens) for our consumption and a few choice neighbors. The concept was we Grew, Harvested and Marketed direct to the consumer, therefore enjoying al of the profit centers, not usually afforded the larger commercial acreage Grower.

The best part was, our children learned early, the importance of responsibility and having FUN at same time, we were always together before and after school and grew to become a unit. These exercise helped their math skills, working the fruit stand and never had time to be Lazy or Whiney. Television time was rare, they would rather be outside and active.

As they matured and left the Homestead, we cut back to 11 acres and basically a Horse Boarding Facility.

But a couple years ago the urge returned.

I set out a few Tomato plants as an experiment of obtaining optimized yield from careful nurturing naturally.

The bug bit me hard.

This year 2008 we set out 24 Tomato plants as a business model experiment for our Classes at Beginners Marketing Class

I designed a Business Plan, Cash Flow projection and stated the GOAL.

  • 24 tomato plants (200 square feet)
  • Yield per plant 50 pounds = 1,000 pounds
  • Average selling price $1.00 pound
  • Expenses less than $150
  • Net projection = $850 For FUN
  • Health benefits, Priceless

The progress was then, and is being video recorded and posted for the Public view

In these interesting times of supposed economic "hardship", many may find themselves off-setting some of the rising costs by growing some crops. If you are short of space, containers yield bushels. For instance a Tire Potato Planting on a Patio can easily yield 40-50# pounds of delicious fresh Potatoes. And enjoy the added Health Benefits of the exercise and fresh air. Gosh, you may able to cut out your television expenses.

In our "golden years" we are finding thing just getting better, once we decided again to take charge.

Everyone, regardless where you live can enjoy Fresh health produce, get some exercise and maybe add a few dollars to the cookie Jar, by getting out and growing some Fun and beauty.
