Travel Lingo

I know you're thinking seriously about that honeymoon destination ~whether it is lying on the beach, skiing down a slope of a mountain or maybe playing a round of golf. However if you're planning on taking a plane there are some words you should understand before buying your tickets.

All-inclusive ~ It usually refers to a resort or cruise which includes your accommodations, your meals and any entertainment that you will witness as a guest. However watch out! You may be charged extra for alcoholic beverages, tips and taxes.

Amenity ~ It refers to "extras" that a cruise or hotel might offer to you. Some examples might include an indoor pool, internet connection, weight and excerise room, in-room refrigerator stocked with liquor or "goodies", coffee maker, laundry services. Some of these are free ~ compliments of the establishment, but some are added to your bill, so watch out!

Baggage Allowance ~ Each airline designates a maximum size and weight of luggage that is allowed on the plane. If you exceed the weight or size you will be charged an additional fee.

Blackout Periods ~ During days of peak travel such as Thanksgiving, Christmas the airlines will suspend the lower prices and these periods are blackout periods.

Cancellation fee ~ When you have to cancel a flight or cruise the airlines or cruise lines will charge you with a penalty for cancelling. Before you purchase your tickets check on the cancellation fee, as some of the fees might be a bit high.

Concierge- A member of the hotel who can be your tour guide, get the theater tickets you want, get you a car rental or make reservations for dinner at the location of your choosing.

Flights ~~~

Charter ~ They are usually organized by a tour director. You can get a cheaper price than the commercial flights, but there is a lower quality of service, inconvenient flight times and heavy restrictions

Non-Stop ~ A flight which goes directly to your destination. These flights book up quickly, as most people want this kind of flight!! Book early!!

Direct flight ~ A flight where you stop at another airport, but you do not change planes

Connecting flight~ A flight where you stop at another airport and you have to change planes. Don't confuse it with a direct flight. There is probably a time period of waiting until you board the second plane.

Force Majeure ~ A clause in your airline contract that says the operator is not responsible for an"Act of God" This means a war or storms.

Layover ~ Amount of time you spend between the landing of your first flight and the departure of your second flight.

Jetlag ~ A condition of sleeplessness that you get when you travel through different time zones.

During Flight ~ Drink plenty of water, if posssibe abstain from coffee and alcohol.

Set your watch to your destinations local time as soon as you board the plane

No Show ~ A person who fails to cancel a plane, car or hotel reservation

Open Jaw ~ This trip is one in which you depart from one city and later return from another city. This can add considerably to the price of your ticket.

Normal Fares ~ 1st Class, business class or economy class ~have no restrictions

Restricted Class ~ As the name signifies there are lots of restrictions, but you can buy them much cheaper.

Shoulder season ~ Period of time that falls between the peak and off-peak season. You usually have good deals and the weather is probably favorable.

Vaccination ~ injection of a microrganism that is given to prevent some infectious diseases.

Vias ~ A stamp which is appended to your passport which allows you to spend some time in a foreign country.
